Contemporary Anatolia - Manifesto

There’s nothing new under the sun. Perspectives can change. Technology usage and/or speed of production may increase. So what do all these mean in terms of human existence and aesthetic reception?

 

The equilateral triangle has always been equilateral. What matters is how that triangle is is perceived and interpreted (by the viewer)

Whatever we attribute value to; art is art “only if” it can connect with its audience emotionally, intuitively or informationally. Art is “a priori” knowledge. It is independent of experience and experiment. I see no harm in calling this -the first metaphor in the audience – the “set of premises” Art shares itself with the viewer to the extent that s/he perceives it. The plastic value of the art work is proportional to the level of perception. Following this logic, we arrive at the conclusion that the knowledge of art is still hidden in art.

Independent of the style, art is a reflection of nature. For human beings, who are all doomed to die, art must be the essence or the pure knowledge which is hidden in nature. Hidden knowledge that people cannot or prefer not to perceive can only see the light of day with the power of exploration and interpretation.

Root and metamorphosis

What do we see when we integrate this theoretical framework with the Anatolian heritage? Societies that have been living in the Anatolian geography have always been at peace with nature.

Ways of thinking or perceiving undergo metamorphosis over time. But the "material essence" stands still in our roots. This approach implies that the essential knowledge of the tree is stored in the part close to the root.

Rather than defending plastic values ​​with another vision -as if for the first time-, an effort to reinterpret them will put us back on the right track. There comes the basic law: Acknowledging that the novelty arises from the interpretation rather than claiming that the form –per se- is "new", is a call for fidelity to truth.

Whatever is developed by interpretation is not only the current reflection of what existed in the past, but its adaptation to the age within which we breath .

When reinterpreted by a contemporary artist on the canvas, the meaning hidden in an ancient rug woven with horizontal stripes or a pattern embroidered ten centuries ago, evokes common feelings in the viewer. If there is no ontological inquery in art, forms and colors are equivalent.

Vandalism of Craftsmanship

Some may talk about the emergence of a new understanding throughout evolving formal and cultural tendencies. If there is no philosophical - or to be more precise ontological - inquiry, the result is only a unit repetition of the past. If the production of art consists just of repetition, it can be nothing but craft.

What is art then?

An idea becomes art if it comes to life in a “material form” different than the previous ones. Authenticity touches your heart . What is original is the "style" that the artist creates .

I define the route that directs me with the concept of “Contemporary Anatolian Art”. I am trying to reinterpret the “knowledge of the nature “which has been there for thousands of years. I don’t claim that I have found a new form or constructed a new understanding of balance on this path. Honestly, I find these kinds of claims unsophisticated. I aim to create the untouched intellectual base of the traditional and authentic.

If a new intellectual base has been created, which Anatolia is the source of inspiration? Is it a certain period or era? Any ethnicity?

If the mind of every single individual in front of my art work is exposed to an aphrodisiac effect and feels palpitations in his / her heart, I will feel myself on the right track.

The artist should know that the ideal form and balance are attributes that are only peculiar to nature. If the artist has a mind integrated with nature, the means for art production are open for him/her….

Touching the knowledge that we believe is hidden in the sublimity of nature does not make the created form unique. It shows the way to the artist's intellectual basis.Those who defend the opposite are in a vandalistic attitude against the rules that appear in the artist's mind. Those who defend the opposite are people who are ignorant of the book of nature. The knowledge and form beyond that base has not yet been found.

Stylistic thesis

“Anatolian Contemporary” is a stylistic thesis that defends, updates and explores re-creation with the same feelings and perception which has always been embedded to this geographical land.

The universe of thought is in infinite cyclicity. Every thought that finds its place in time and every form that symbolizes it, are substantiations of evolution in the realm of the abstract

I am not claiming to create a new movement or to take the center stage in the “market place” of art. The path I follow is a new style as opposed to a new form. (It implies that) before transforming the idea into a form; it is essential to acknowledge that “the essence” is the idea itself. While this is the intellectual basis; the superstructure constructed upon this basis should be conceptualized as Contemporary Anatolia.
